While writing the LOST BOYS book, I have taken the time to revisit much of Dick Donner's extraordinary back catalogue. I'll probably be crucified for saying this, but my favourite Donner movie, by a country mile, is indeed LETHAL WEAPON. I was recently scolded for suggesting LW as the ultimate Christmas/Action flick over DIE HARD.
LETHAL WEAPON (1987)
dir. Richard Donner
Starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover
Whether you agree with that bold statement or not, what can't be denied is that LETHAL WEAPON undoubtedly created the formula, for which all buddy cop movies that came after, would follow. The on screen chemistry between Gibson and Glover is electric, Donner's direction is as masterful as any movie he has made, and Shane Black's script is as fun and exciting as it is raw and gritty. LETHAL WEAPON certainly brought box office and critical credibility back to a genre that, at the time, was all about how many people Arnie could kill in a minute, and how little dialogue Chuck Norris could get away with in 90mins. In addition to that, it also spawned three sequels that I also think are insanely fun movies and highly underrated as far as sequels go. That said, the first movie is where it's at, and it's a film that I can easily watch over and over without tiring. WATCH TRAILER
